Nepenthe

How deeply dreams are woke

before they are shattered

I can almost touch you

feel your  burning arms

And then you say to me:

‘I cannot stay’

Your words stab my ears

Each mortal sound thick and full

Each last letter bitter

down to my stomach

I know you cannot stay

But somehow

not hearing you say it

makes me forget

my dingy suffering.
