Poems, Stories, (Bookish) Thoughts

The ability to create and to be able to breathe life into that creation, so that it stirs a reader in many different ways – maybe takes them into a past, enables them to make meaning or interpret some present, or even throws them into a future in such a way that their minds are opened to the many possibilities, for me, is truly a kind of magic I never want to lose.

I Should Stop Writing!

Where do writers go when they no longer want to write, because I’d be the first to head there right now. I am not used to venting out my frustrations on social media. I am trying hard to keep my personal life out of people’s faces (as if they don’t have problems of their own), but when I took to twitter last night to vent, I realized how deeply I had been cut. I have reached the point where my mouth has become sore from keeping mute over issues that are highly upsetting.

Why am I pissed? I’ll tell you why. I have just endured 48 hours (my most recent one) of people telling me which direction my ‘crooked little life’ should be headed. As usual, I’ve had a few more people giving me ‘the look’; that look of ‘is there something wrong with you?’

Trust me, I have tried, many times, and I am still trying to veer off the ‘Poets vs. Spoken Word Artists War’; who is more superior, who is nonpareil, who is larger, and for very good reasons.

For starters, I feel it is total nonsense that people would want to put the two up against each other for the mere purpose of egotism and narcissism. I don’t have to tell you the number of times I have endured nose turn up, and the ‘oh so you don’t perform?’ look like it were some deficiency, some disease, some STD, some sin!

And to crown it all, the ‘what kind of a poet are you then’ line. Excuse me? What kind of a poet am I? Probably the kind who wants you out of her face right now. If it bothers you so much that I’m not on stage then why don’t you go up there yourself and have a blast while you’re at it instead of sitting here, giving me a 30 minutes lecture—which clearly I didn’t ask for.

I have immense respect (hat off) for spoken word artists and performing poets. I could mention a few I really like, but let me stay off that chart right now.

When a ‘random’ person thinks and feels you are doing it all wrong because what you are doing is ‘unknown’ to them, or they can’t appreciate it enough, then there is a problem.

Why should someone going on a stage to perform poetry upset you? And why should someone just choosing to write poetry upset you? What is this needless struggle for supremacy and superiority for? Can’t we all just do what we love to do without having to drag anyone down into the mud just so we can feel better about ourselves?

There’s a lot we writers have to deal with, not only in our part of the world, but everywhere else for that matter; the thing about we going hungry because ‘being a writer cannot and will not put food on our table’. Well maybe it isn’t food I’m looking to have on my table. Maybe I’m just not (that) hungry.

If writing is about showing off, building walls, and placing people in boxes then maybe I should stop writing. Maybe we all should. Because I find it totally against the purpose of the art.

This struggle isn’t real. What’s real is people stressing others with their road markings and their perception of how others should live their life.

It is very sad and disheartening to see young people ‘stop growing’ because of this false sense of arrival. Which is in fact, one of the major causes of stagnation in the life of many creatives today. A little recognition and they become larger than the skies. Why focus on developing their talent when people are singing their praises?

I get it. You are the deal right now, and you are living the life (hopefully you are). But dude, can you take your over-accomplished pedestrian life out of my face right now and let me continue doing the things I love to do just because I love to do them.

You don’t have to ‘feel bad’ for me that I am not ‘performing’ my poetry. You don’t have to ask me to pay you so you can perform my poetry. And you certainly don’t have to give me a performance timeline. That decision and a couple more should be determined by me, just me, and nobody else. Can we respect each other’s space? Above all, can we respect the art? A good friend of mine once said “There’s no one way of being a poet. The fact that some people don’t understand this means they don’t understand poetry or art.”

It’s just that. Really! And I’m done.

  2. I thought I was the only one experiencing this. I am the kind of writer who hides in her room and writes. Anytime I tell people I am a poet, they ask where I have been performing. I tell them I am not a spoken word artist. They become shocked. I just don’t know why they think like that.

    1. I really don’t know how the notion of ‘all poets must perform’ started. It’s funny in an unfortunate way, that people think like that! Tsk Tsk 😐

  3. Twinny, you already know how I feel about this and I will be the first person to tell you to do as you please. Some people are born for the stage, others are not but what we owe to ourselves is to find what we are good at and excel in it. Even in the body of Christ, each one of us have our function – none of us have the same job to do.
You choose to write – perfecto.
Another chooses to speak – perfecto.
Another chooses to do both – perfecto.
I do not see how these choices should be compared to each other or how one should be superior than the other.

You are an amazing writer (I won’t say just poet because you have mastered most of the art of writing) and you should never give up on you or your passion. You venture into new entities when it pleases you and not because somebody said so.

Do you wai and shine brightest like the pintsize star that you are.

    1. I know NJ. This is not about the ‘Poets vs. SW Artists’ war. Heck it’s not even a ‘war’. It’s about people constantly telling me what they feel I should be doing. Urgh!

  5. Each one of us has their ‘calling’. Some on the stage, some on paper. Not all are cut for the other. People should stop forcing others to be what they aren’t or don’t want to be.
    Good one Naa.

    1. Exactly my point @swaye. It’s not a matter of ‘can’ or ‘cannot’. Just don’t force people to become something you think is good for them. If the person wants it, fine. If they don’t, also fine. That decision should be left ONLY to them 😥😡😡

  6. Wow. Interesting comments. Naa don’t mind them. With your Economics background, you should join we the financial writers. You don’t have to perform it on stage. There are no formulars, no rules, just Money, Markets, Millionaires and some little Madness. 😊😂😂😆😆.

  7. Very timely for me this blog and the statement there’s no one way of being a poet… Joined a group of poets in the hopes that fellow creatives will appreciate my less than usual way of writing all I got in turn was a turning up of the nose and a killing of my little confidence… Why can’t people just be happy in their freedom to let out their thoughts via keyboard or speaker(their choice after all) and allow others to do so too without feeling the need to compare? No art is better than the other they just communicate different feelings and relate to different types of people
I was done too a month or so ago… Naa you just made me realise I dont do it for them

    1. It’s very unfortunate to hear this happened to you, but I’m happy you have realized that you do not write for them. I sincerely hope you go back to writing ❤

  9. Awesome write up. Most people would have turned this into an attack on Spoken Word, but you didn’t. So this makes it easy for all of us to relate because at some point in our lives, people have made such condescending suggestions concerning our arts. People actually want me to write about things they are passionate about. As if art isn’t from the heart. If I dont feel it I wont write it. Period. Smh. And about you missing out on some money spoken word artists are making eh, it is a fallacy. We aren’t making foko!!

    1. Thank you Eli. I really do not believe I’m missing out though. I enjoy what I do, and everyone else should, with whatever they choose to do. I just got tired of people trying to ‘drag’ me to the stage 😧😧😥

  10. 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾 This is a brilliant rant, first of all.
Secondly, it happened to come at a point when I was about to write a post called “Why I Want To Quit Performing”. Isn’t it interesting how the world works?
This may or may not be immediately relevant but Ive realized a lot of the people around me do not like reading. They’d rather listen to things that will entertain them. Emphasis on entertain. So even if you did spoken word, if it was not entertaining, you’d receive another round of undue blasting.
Again, I appreciate your rant. I never knew this was an actual problem. Thank you for enlightening me. Also, I love your writing. Keep doing you, Naa! 💜

    1. Please don’t quit the stage. You are one of my favorite performers.

Most non-spoken word artist don’t talk about this frustration but at one time or the other we get asked why we don’t perform, in a condescending tone.

I’ve been told to think of all the money I could be making. I’ve been told I’m not ambitious enough. I’ve been told I’m not doing enough to promote the industry.

My usual response is “I write for myself.”

    2. Interesting Akotowaa. You are re-echoing what Amma just said. People do not like reading, especially if it’s something they won’t easily grasp. Please don’t stop doing you. I admire you; written or spoken poetry, you’re good! 💕❤❤

  11. Wow girl, I wish I could see you displacing your anger on tour poor keyboard. Don’t mind them, okay? Every creative artist has his own personal assignment. The fact that not everyone realizes that is frustrating but it’s their problem. Keep doing what you do. Whenever you decide to, they will know why you waited till that moment. And even if you don’t, you’ll still shine wherever you are. Happy Sunday, Naa.

    1. So true so true.
I was recently asked to come join other spoken word artists perform at a show and I pointed out to the guy who asked me that I don’t do spoken word and he was shocked. He proceeded to ask me if I was really a poet. I laughed and tried not to get upset.
It’s infuriating that some people think all writers must be performers. It’s even more infuriating when people who write look down on other writers because they don’t perform.
