SURVIVORS

Horrifying sounds of beating drums
Terrifying tunes of dirges
Fear-provoking songs of elegy
Wails of mothers; screams of children
Cowardice of those men that held us back
Merely with that deafening sound

In fear of the shot along we tagged
Into the unknown…
In chains of sorrow, metals of grief
Bubbles of sweat gathered on our brows
Tumbling down our faces
Salt effect stung our sore lips

Our hands scrawny, our nails broken
Fiery breath; bloodshot eyes
Heavy tongues; dusty red logs of hair
Shreds of rugs, skins scaly and flaking
Too many whips came with each fall
Too many hits came with each defiant look

We marched on in hope of independence
We trailed on in hope of freedom
The hope of reunion sparked our grimy cheeks
Our native soil was the deep away
In great culture we found our voices
In poetic ethnic mantra

Our god in sight perceiving our plight
Met by scorn, greeted by pity
And tormented by the lighter
We remained standing
The strength of one; conductor of strength to all
Arise Brother! Liberation lurks neigh.
